European City Seminars 2010: "Ethnicity in the City"

Ostrava (Czech Republic) and Krakow (Poland), 16 - 21 April 2010

Bratislava (Slovakia) and Vienna (Austria), 14 - 18 May 2010

Berlin (Germany), 18 - 21 June 2010

Historically, European cities always faced the challenge of dealing with migration; the urban much more than the rural spaces thus became the realm in which the ability to integrate, accommodate and include diverse and changing populations had to be negotiated. Any talk of inclusion should, however take note underlying power structures, and question who defines the rules of integration. How are the chances of this model´s survival in a changing economic and demographic environment, characterized by the influx of new migrants, the rising power of developers and investors, and the spread of urban areas beyond its historic borders? The uncertainty about the future of the "European city" model is maybe most visible in case of the cities of Central and Eastern Europe, which experience a process of rapid changes that affects the cities´ social and built fabric and the political steering of its development.

The Meaning and Practice of Immigration Detention: Perspectives from Legal, Political and Social Theory

Friday 21st May 2010

StAntony ̕ s College, The Refugee Studies Centre and the Centre on Migration Policy and Society, University of Oxford

This workshop aims to provide an academic forum for the discussion of immigration detention in liberal, democratic countries. This practice raises important questions for researchers from different fields of study. These questions include:

What implication does immigration detention have for understanding state power and the future governance of communities? How is this practice located in the wider history of immigration control in liberal, democratic states? Why are immigration detention regimes continuing to expand? How is it contributing to the reformulation of citizenship?

International Conference: MIGRATIONS – Knowledge production/Policy-making 24 – 26 June 2010, Telč, Czech Republic

Department of Sociology, Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University

Based on our 2008 experience, we continue to seek for a lively discussion environment among scholars who have been active in migration research, not just on the European scale. The keynote speakers will bring fresh ideas that will be discussed by Ph.D. students and other scholars. We aspire to juxtapose multiple views and by doing this to reinforce critical thinking about migrations in the contemporary world. Conference framework papers will be made available before the conference. Conference participants are called to prepare their contributions taking into account these framework papers.

VII. HUNGARIAN CONFERENCE ON POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY – “The political geographical issues of the Hungarian EU Presidency”

The European Union as an entity owns especially numerous classical and novel political geographical problems. Some of them are related to interior issues (centre – periphery, core region, the relation of state and citizens etc.), while others refer to the relations and interactions between the EU and the other actors of world politics (borders, access to resources, conflict zones, international migration, neighbourhood policy etc.). The troubles and the problematic geographical regions have been already separately dealt with on several scientific and professional forums; nevertheless we put an emphasis on the European Union itself. We do not intend to examine the political geographical issues of the individual member states, but we focus on the political geographical matters of the European Union as an entity.
